MCAT Practice Timer
The MCAT is a marathon: four sections, 7 h 5 min with the breaks, and a score that depends on the last section as much as the first. Full-length practice tests are how you build the stamina, and they only help if you take them under real timing.
The timer's buttons follow the day: chem/phys, break, CARS, lunch, bio/biochem and psych/soc, each at its official length, and the timer moves to the next one as each ends.
A full-length MCAT, in order
| Part | Time | Questions | Time per question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemical and Physical Foundations | 95 min | 59 | 1 min 37 s |
| Optional break | 10 min | ||
| Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills | 90 min | 53 | 1 min 42 s |
| Optional lunch break | 30 min | ||
| Biological and Biochemical Foundations | 95 min | 59 | 1 min 37 s |
| Optional break | 10 min | ||
| Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations | 95 min | 59 | 1 min 37 s |
Timings follow the official structure published by AAMC, what's on the MCAT exam, checked in October 2026. Test makers change formats, so check the official page before test day.
Use the breaks, every one
The breaks are optional on test day, and some students skip them to finish sooner. On a seven-hour test that is usually a mistake. Psych/Soc comes last, after six hours, and it is a section where tired reading costs points. The two ten-minute breaks and the half-hour lunch are what keep that last section sharp.
Practise the breaks as seriously as the sections. Eat the same snack you will bring, at the same point. Stand up, walk, and do not review content in the break: whatever you just did is done.
Pacing per section
The science sections give you about 97 seconds per question and CARS gives you about 102. In practice, passages take most of the time: aim for roughly 8 to 9 minutes per passage in the science sections, including its questions, and about 10 minutes per CARS passage. Discrete questions, the standalone ones, should be quick, which banks time for the passages.
On weekdays between full-lengths, a single section is enough: run one section button, or the deep work timer for long content review blocks.
