Finals Week Schedule: A 7 Day Pomodoro Plan

pomofox · October 2, 2026

Finals week goes wrong in two ways: too little planning, so the hardest exam gets the least time, or too much ambition, so day one is twelve hours and day three is a write-off. A schedule built from pomodoros avoids both. Run the sessions on the pomodoro timer and plan the week in sessions, not hours.

If the method is new to you, read the pomodoro technique guide first.

Step 1: give every exam a budget

List your exams and give each a weight from 1 to 3: how hard it is for you, plus how much it counts. Then give each exam pomodoros in proportion. A typical week has room for about 50 to 60 sessions in total: eight on a full day, fewer on exam days.

Step 2: lay out the week

Seven day finals schedule
DayMorning (4 pomodoros)Afternoon (4 pomodoros)Evening
Day 1hardest exam: content reviewsecond exam: past paper questionslight flashcards, 2 sessions
Day 2hardest exam: problemsthird exam: essay plansrest
Day 3second exam: full timed paperreview that paper's mistakeslight flashcards, 2 sessions
Day 4hardest exam: full timed paperfourth exam: speaking or vocabrest
Day 5third exam: one timed essayhardest exam: mistakes onlylight review, 2 sessions
Day 6weakest topics across all examssecond full paper, whichever exam is firstearly night
Day 7light review of the first exam onlyrestsleep

Put each exam's full timed paper at least two days before it, so there is time to fix what it reveals. For standardized tests, the practice timers on the exam timer page have a button for each section length.

Step 3: protect sleep and breaks

The schedule has evenings off and a light last day on purpose. Sleep is when memory consolidates, and an all-nighter before an exam trades a little extra review for a slower, foggier brain on the day. Long breaks between cycles are where you eat a real meal and get outside.

  • Stop at eight to ten pomodoros a day. After that, quality drops fast.
  • Never skip the long break between the morning and afternoon cycles.
  • Keep the phone in another room during sessions, and on the breaks too if you can.

Step 4: track it

Tick off each pomodoro against its exam. By day three you will know if the budget is realistic, and you can move sessions from an exam that is going well to one that is not. Keep a tally in your notes, one line per exam.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours should I study during finals week?

About three to four hours of focused study a day, eight pomodoros, is a strong and sustainable amount. More than ten pomodoros a day usually lowers quality.

Should I pull an all-nighter before a final?

Generally no. Sleep consolidates what you studied, and a tired brain performs worse on the day.
