Classroom Timer
Put this on the projector and the class can watch time pass. A pixel fox runs around the ring as the minutes count down, so younger students who do not read clocks yet can still see how much is left.
The timer's own buttons set 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes. Press the fullscreen button in the menu for projector mode: the menu disappears and only the timer is left. There are no ads, no sign-in and nothing that pops up in front of a class.
Lengths for the moments a lesson needs
| Button | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 5 min | warm-up questions, exit tickets, tidying up |
| 10 min | group tasks, silent reading |
| 15 min | independent practice, a short quiz |
| 30 min | a longer task or a timed test |
For any other length, the countdown timer takes hours, minutes and seconds.
Why a visible timer helps a class
"Two more minutes" means very different things to different eight-year-olds. A timer on the board makes the deadline the same for everyone and takes the teacher out of the role of clock-watcher. Transitions get quicker because students can pace themselves, and the end of an activity is no longer a surprise.
An alarm plays when the time is up, and the timer is ready to run the same length again for the next activity.
Ideas for using it
- Beat the fox. Challenge the class to finish cleaning up before the fox completes its lap.
- Silent reading laps. Ten-minute laps with a one-minute stretch in between.
- Station rotations. Use the same length for every station so groups move together.
- Teach the pomodoro method to older students, with the pomodoro technique guide.
