How Long Is a Pomodoro?

pomofox · October 2, 2026

A pomodoro is 25 minutes of focused work. After it comes a 5 minute short break, and after every fourth pomodoro a 15 to 30 minute long break. You can run all of that on the pomodoro timer without setting anything.

Those are the classic numbers from the pomodoro technique. Below is what each one is for, how long a full cycle takes, and when it makes sense to change them.

Why 25 minutes?

Twenty-five minutes is long enough to get real work done and short enough that almost anyone can protect it from interruptions. The technique's inventor, Francesco Cirillo, settled on it by experimenting; it is a practical choice, not a number from a lab. Its strength is that it is easy to say yes to: you can always find 25 minutes, and once you start, you usually keep going.

How long is a full pomodoro cycle?

Four pomodoros of 25 minutes is 100 minutes of focus. Add three short breaks of 5 minutes (15 minutes) and you reach the long break 1 hour 55 minutes after you started. With a 15 minute long break the whole cycle takes 2 hours 10 minutes; with a 30 minute long break, 2 hours 25.

That makes a cycle a natural half-day unit. Two cycles, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, give you eight pomodoros, a bit over three hours of real focus, which is a strong day for most people.

How long should the breaks be?

The short break is for resetting, not resting: stand up, drink water, look at something far away. Five minutes is enough for that and short enough that it does not turn into something else. The long break is real rest. Fifteen minutes is the minimum; thirty is better after a hard set, and it is a good time to eat.

If your breaks keep running over, the problem is usually what you do in them, not their length. Anything with a feed (email, chat, social media) will happily take twenty minutes. Turning on auto-start in the timer settings ends the break for you.

When to change the length

  • Shorter (10 to 15 minutes) when starting is the hard part, on low-energy days, or for ADHD-friendly sessions.
  • Longer (45 to 50 minutes) for problem sets, reading and writing, where warming up takes a while. See the 50/10 timer.
  • Much longer (90 minutes) for deep work on familiar tasks, with a 15 to 20 minute break. See the deep work timer.

In pomofox's own data, 25 minutes is by far the most common session length, but about one session in six runs 50 minutes or longer. The data report has the full breakdown.
